The killer dentist, his mistress, how they murdered their spouses - and how they almost got away with it. Now a major four-part ITV drama starring James Nesbitt:
'Unswitchoffable' Guardian
'James Nesbitt is at his magnetic best' The Times
'The most grown up drama of the week and it's brilliant' Observer
'Terrific, intensely gripping' Daily Telegraph
May 1991 in the seaside town of Castlerock in Northern Ireland and the bodies of two people - police officer Trevor Buchanan and nurse Lesley Howell - are found in a car filled with carbon monoxide. Their spouses are having an affair and, it appears, the pair are so distraught they have taken their own lives. Their adulterous spouses - Sunday school teacher Hazel Buchanan and dentist Colin Howell - had met in the local Baptist Church. Following the apparent double-suicide, they continued their affair secretly but both later remarried other people.
A series of disasters in Howell's life - bereavement, financial disaster, sexual scandal - made him reveal his darkest secrets to the elders of his church. Among other things, he told them that he and Hazel Stewart had conspired to murder their spouses nearly two decades earlier. That confession led to two of the most sensational murder trials ever seen in the United Kingdom, Howell's conviction for murder in December 2010 and Stewart's in March 2011, despite her protestations of innocence.
'It was a dance between control and manipulation' - Colin Howell at the trial of Hazel Stewart
For The Secret distinguished journalist Deric Henderson conducted extensive research and in it he has produced the definitive account of one of the most extraordinary murder cases to hit these islands for decades.

Too much filler and repetition
By MP129
After reading the Kindle sample, I thought this crime and the principal character were interesting enough that I purchased the entire book. What a mistake. There was way too much unnecessary background information about the main characters and it was written over and over again. Who cares about minute details of their school years? Why does the author keep repeating the details of the marriage counseling sessions? These are just a few areas where the author has padded the story. This book is filled with personal opinions and quotes, rather than with facts from a police investigation. After a criminal conviction, people are naturally going to say that they sensed all along that something about the convicted person was strange. Yet the police originally thought that when the murders were commited that they were suicides. Reading this book was a waste of time. I was bored before reading half of this story. I've read many excellent true crime stories, but this wasn't one of them.

heartbreaking crime well documented
By blueridgesuze
A very good book. The victims, the adulterous spouses, their church and their community were presented in a very believable way. Yes,there is quite a bit of detail but,for me,that detail provided a clear portrait of the crime and a picture of the lives of the people in the book. This book is about an unbelievable crime. Two selfish people made the choice to commit a cold blooded murder in which the victims are misrepresented and actually held responsible for their own deaths. The crime demonetrated the murderer's total lack of concern for their parents, siblings, and worse of all, their own children. So many lives were and still are affected by this heartbreaking and tragic crime. The book emphasizes the devastation left behind years after a crime. The author does an oustanding job of conveying the unresolved conflict and the grief experienced by the families. Fortunately, some degree of justice was finally served. I thought the book was well written and I would buy another book by this author.

Too Wordy and Repetitive
By R PRIUS
This is one of those books that might have been far better had it stuck to the facts and not been padded to death with extraneous words and repetitive material. As it stands, this is not so much a jumbled mess as much as a boring mess. I managed to get through it and extract the basics that this in all probability was a deliberate case of murder to rid an adulterous pair of their inconvenient spouses. As it stands, it is an interesting story that suffers greatly from the interminable repetition and unnecessary padding that it has been subjected to.
5* for the facts and 3* for the writing. It would make a better tv movie than a book.
