Anna Faktorovich is the founder and director of the Anaphora Literary Press and the editor-in-chief of the Pennsylvania Literary Journal. She has been a professor of English for the Middle Georgia College and for the Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.

Different readers, different novels

I was somehow disapointed with this essay, especially when the author says the following: �This is not a book that offers congratulations to formulaic genre writers (...). If more critics wrote about plagiarism, plot repetitions and bare-bones monosyllabic writing, we would once again be able to buy modern literary fiction.� (Loc. 4842). Repetion is the backbone of "popular fiction" (paraliterature). This kind of fiction is aimed at its readres, not the critics. "Popular" writers produce for the market in order to satisfy the needs, i.e., the taste of the readers. It is useless to try to fight this. In a market oriented society, where most books are just a product among many others, there is no way critics can alter this. On the other hand, there are modern literary writers. Those who can't stand formulaic fiction don't have to read it, as there are plenty of good literary novels for demanding readers. I sometimes ask myself why French scholars such as Fondan�che and Boyer, among others, who have extensive reaserch on formulaic fiction don't appear on the bibliography of English speaking scholars. It would be very enlightening.

For Neophytes

Anna Faktorovich's Formulas of Popular Fiction is a competent introduction for Indie or aspiring authors concerning the structures of genre fiction, basic industry background, and the analyses of some of popular fiction's most read authors.

Much of the plot analyses are based upon the work of Christopher Booker and his book The Seven Basic Plots. Faktorovich boils these down to their essentials and offers some very basic critiques of Booker's theory. If readers are looking for more depth than Formulas of Popular Fiction offers they should look to The Seven Basic Plots.

However, if readers are looking for something quick and practical Faktorovich's book might be a good place to start...but it represent only a very basic beginning.

Rating: 3 out of 5 Stars

Recommended for aspiring authors with little or no background in plotting or the English Canon. Not for those who wish to write non-formulaic fiction.

Glutathione (or its reduced form, GSH) is a natural protein found in the body's cells and in many fresh fruits and vegetables. Pressman, a chiropractor and nutritionist, considers glutathione to be the most important antioxidant molecule, high levels of which appear to protect against the dangers of cancer, heart disease, premature aging, autoimmune diseases, and chronic illnesses. Glutathione plays an essential role in helping the liver detoxify environmental poisons and the body's own metabolic wastes, a process necessary to overall health. Pressman excels at explaining the workings of the liver and gastrointestinal system and outlining possible functional tests to measure how well these viscera are operating. Nutritional and supplementation programs for common conditions are given--with appropriate caveats--including foods rich in glutathione or its building blocks and foods that naturally stimulate its production in the body (e.g., cruciferous vegetables and parsley). When I ordered the book, I hadn’t expected that its content was covering so widely around as it actually is doing, and thereby the Glutathione being even more important for our health than I thought.

In the book, there are much scientific information, and some patient cases, often patients who came to him when their ordinary doctors nearly nothing knew about vitamins and minerals, or what they had done hadn’t helped. But the text is written in a helpful way, so easy to follow.

And there, concerning vitamins and minerals, to my wife, the doctors here in Chiang May again and again have told her that it’s dangerous to take vitamin each day in the week, and besides newer have mentioned a word about vitamins and minerals in connection to a sickness or a surgery.

Throughout the book in connection to all of the health problem cases we are getting lists we the good daily supplements of vitamins and minerals to take, as the body then need more than normally, and some of it which especially will be helpful for the cure.

Besides what we can see in the contents, we for example in the chapters also read about AIDS, Alzheimer’s disease, cholesterol, chronic fatigue syndrome, diabetic, heart disease, lupus erythematosus, memory loss, multiple sclerosis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, white blood cells, and more.

And besides in the chapter 3 concerning environmental illness, we are getting much good information about the bad aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, mercury, and nickel, how to take care and what to do against them.

All together at fantastic good book concerning how to take care about the health.

This is one of the better "preventative" books I've read. The author's explaination of how GSH works in your body is very easy to understand.
Folks, who worry about hereditary disease, or who are left with no "medical" solutions should read this.

Brilliant, provocative, and wildly entertaining

When I picked up this book, I was skeptical. Bloom's counterintuitive claim is that empathy - putting oneself in the shoes of another and feeling what they feel - causes us to make bad moral decisions. How on earth could empathy be a bad thing? But with each chapter, Bloom lays out the prosecution’s case, and by the end, empathy is soundly convicted - it is not useful in helping make the world a better place. Bloom’s argument in a nutshell - empathy is biased, parochial, and irrational. It leads us astray and foils our efforts to make good moral decisions. For example, our emotional brain systems respond to individuals, but aren’t sensitive to their numbers, so they can respond similarly to situations with 2 victims, and situations with 2000 victims. For another example, it’s much easier to empathize with attractive/cute/adorable victims, and with people who resemble our own selves, than with ugly victims and those who differ from us, so empathy leads us to care more about some individuals than other, equally-needy ones. For a third example, it’s impossible to empathize with hypothetical, faceless victims that don’t even exist yet, so our feelings of empathy don’t respond to the plight of future generations - a consideration that's critical for making good public policy decisions (climate change policies, vaccination programs, etc.). There are many other problems with empathy as well, often quite surprising ones.

Importantly, Bloom doesn’t argue that there’s no positive role for empathy in our lives - it’s crucial in our personal relationships for example - but at the larger scale, empathy won’t help make the world a better place, because our emotional systems weren’t designed to help us minimize world suffering, but to motivate us to help our family and friends and to weight them over others. Thus, the subtitle of his book, “The Case for Rational Compassion.” Concern for others’ welfare (compassion) is not the same as feeling what others feel (empathy), and it is the former, Bloom argues, that we need to cultivate to guide our moral decisions in the larger world in which we live - a more distanced, principled stance that involves caring about others, but not favoring some individuals over others. The book has caused me to sit back and try to think much more logically about my own charitable giving, what principles I want to support and where it will do the most good, as opposed to spontaneously giving to random causes that pull my heartstrings. The goal of being a better person, it turns out, is a little like the goal of being a healthy person - you have to resist the easy appealing option junk-food (Cheetos from the vending machine; the adorable baby seal blinking its liquid brown eyes) and go for the more difficult, dispassionate evaluation of nutritional value. What feels good isn’t the same as what is good - for us, and for others.

Bloom's arguments and examples are fascinating, and in addition to being thought-provoking, Bloom is an excellent writer - it’s an engaging, and engrossing, and (somewhat unexpectedly, given its topic) a thoroughly fun and enjoyable read.

An Important Book I Don't Fully Embrace

I thoroughly enjoyed Paul Bloom's book Against Empathy. Bloom set out to make his controversial claim that empathy leads to more harm than good. He’s against it. No really, he is. His words: “I am against empathy, and one of the goals of this book is to persuade you to be against empathy too” (p. 3). I don’t fully agree with his conclusion, but I do agree with a great deal of his argument. I’ve been doing some minor research on the topic of empathy which is what drove me to this book. It is en vogue these days to believe that empathy is key to all morality. Religious and philosophical ethics are commonly out the window; empathy is here to save the day. But is it? Is that claim truly justifiable?

First of all it’s important to note that Bloom is not a cold hearted anti-moralist monster. While he states clearly that he is against empathy, it’s important to note what he is for: “rational compassion.” It’s also important to understand his definition of empathy. He writes “the notion of empathy that I’m most interested in is the act of feeling what you believe other people feel–experiencing what they experience. This is how most psychologists and philosophers use the terms” (pp. 3-4).

I don’t want to write about his findings here but simply wish to note that he writes convincingly about the necessary narrow scope of empathy, it’s moral dilemmas, and biases. He also explores the frequent weaknesses of the test cases that apparently “prove” that empathy is our great moral compass. All of that to simply say, he makes a great case and writes a great book. I am going to write a few issues I take with the book, but mostly I thought it was great. My lopsided review is an attempt to leave the content for you and avoid spoilers.

Ultimately I’m persuaded but not fully convinced by Bloom’s argument. I think his categories are a tad too narrow and don’t allow for the overlap which is the integrated human person. I’m sure he would disagree, but perhaps empathy, rationality, and compassion overlap more than the author allows for. I noticed this early in the book when he wrote that “Many of our moral heroes, real and fictional, are not rational maximizers or ethical eggheads; they are people of heart. From Huckleberry Fin to Pip to Jack Bauer, from Jesus to Gandi to Martin Luther King Jr., they are individuals of great feeling” (p. 6) Really? Gandi, MLK, and Jesus were very rational in their ethics. King’s decision not to return violence for violence is about a lot of things, feeling is not one of them. This is a rationally planned decision to override what feeling would tell you in the moment. These men were all men of “heart,” but they were deeply rational. They were integrated. Jesus is perhaps the most rational ethical figure in history (both King and Gandi followed his ethic). Jesus’ ethic cannot be reduced to his golden rule as the author seemed to hint at. (Important to note that this ethic is shared by all major religions.) Neither can it be ignored. Integration seems key. At one point Bloom writes “if a child is starving, it doesn’t really matter whether the food is delivered by a smiling aid worker who hands it over and then gives the kid a hug, or dropped from the sky by a buzzing drone. The niceties of personal contact are far less important than actually saving lives” (p. 106). Well, yes; mainly true. But again, integration is key. Human touch cannot be measured the same way calories can be counted, and while the immediate need is most certainly food that needn’t diminish the long term – though often immeasurable – impact of human touch. Alas, I’m being a bit “nitpicky.” But one more thing.

Quoting James Rachels, “morality is, at the very least, the effort to guide one’s conduct by reason–that is, to do what there are the best reasons for doing–while giving equal weight to the interests of each individual affected by one’s decision” (p. 52) Here the question is which morality? What is the goal (telos) of morality? I certainly have a different telos than Bloom. This became really clear to me in the fifth chapter on “violence and cruelty.” Bloom writes, “unless we are transformed into angels, violence and the threat of violence are needed to rein in our worst instincts” (p. 179). It strikes me, therefore, that rational compassion is massively important, but the question remains: rational compassion towards what? Who’s version of morality? Who is right on their view of the role of violence, me or Bloom? Who decides. This is an important underlying moral question and I was unclear where he stood.

While I may disagree with some of Bloom’s assessments, I believe empathy has been significantly overplayed. Morality is important for every culture to think through and Bloom confronts what many have taken granted in ours. Despite my disagreement on some points, I am grateful for this work and hope it is widely read.

It makes sense! And it's actually pretty entertaining too.

Being someone deeply interested in Brene Brown's works (e.g. "Daring Greatly") on living a wholehearted life and how empathy plays a key role in this, I thought it would be a worthwhile intellectual challenge to read something that goes against that thought. And it was.

What I discovered, though, is that the views are totally reconcilable. Here, Paul Bloom does a fascinating (and frequently entertaining) job at exploring how empathy should be avoided in moral deliberation (e.g. which governmental programs deserve the most funding?). He also has many interesting diversions as he explores topics such as cruelty, romance, and other topics where empathy could appear.

That said, you as the reader can emerge having learned something that actually makes sense, and still recognize the positives of empathy. It would be the same idea as if someone wrote a book discussing the negatives of love, and titled it "Against Love". Just because there are positives associated with the love, doesn't mean that there aren't negatives too. Here's a book about the negatives. Same thing - just replace love for empathy.

One last note is how fascinatingly philosophical the book gets, especially considering how Bloom is a psychologist. His arguments are very utilitarian and consequentialist, and he spends a some time to defend how these are best fitted for logical, compassionate moral deliberation.

Increases faith and health

A More Excellent Way has affected my life profoundly. Most of all, it has made the Bible come alive for me again, and helped me to really believe God for my healing. It is a very encouraging book. The author maintains that 80% of all illnesses have spiritual roots; if you restrict this to chronic illnesses, which allopathic medicine has little successs with, I would agree with him.

The book seems like it is a long transcription of a seminar that the author, a pastor, gives, and although it seems to ramble at times, I found everything in it useful and practical. I was greatly inspired by his digressions. He makes it clear that his very successful ministry (especially to people with MCS/EI) is in its embryonic stage, and that there is much more to learn in this area. He is very honest and straightforward.

The whole book is very Bible-based. It answers the question, "What if everything in the Bible WERE really true and for today, especially about healing?"...I know that might sound like it's a "name it and claim it" book (but it's not) or like it's a book that puts people down who get prayer but don't get instantly healed (but it's not). Instead it's a book that deals with WHY people might not be healed and practically WHAT they can do from a spiritual perspective. I do not feel condemned or put down because I have not yet been fully healed; instead I feel excited about the spiritual healing the Lord is doing and will continue to do...and so at peace about the physical manifestations and the symptoms and the pain I currently have. I look so forward to continuing to follow the healing steps of the "walk out" and to the work that the Lord is doing in my life because of this book.

The end of the book is filled with pages of testimonies (including very detailed MCS/EI testimonies) that are incredibly uplifting, even for people without this particular illness.

If you are ill, discouraged because you've received prayer but are not yet healed, need encouragement or uplifting, I strongly recommend this book. It will bless you and is well worth the money. I would suggest buying it new or in "like new" condition if you could afford it at all because it is a book you will want to refer to often and keep forever.

An excellent guide to truly understanding the numbers

As someone who works in investment banking, I can say this book is applicable to much more than just due diligence. It can help an analyst through most financial analysis situations(assuming the user knows the basics of how to use and analyze financial statements). What's best about the book is that it goes beyond the theory and academic stuff and gets down to real "how-to's" and "why's". He goes through every account that would appear on the three major financial statements and explains what to look for in them, how to find the answer if it's not readily apparent, what questions to ask and why the questions are important. He also thoroughly examines off-balance sheet, off-income statement and qualitative items that are essential to analysis. Beware, there are no numbers or examples to work through in this book. This book is quite literally one man's experience and intuition put into written form. If you understand that financial analysis is not as cut-and-dry as looking at well-prepared, fully forthcoming financial statements with all the info you need already given, then this book is just what you are looking for. It helps you get the right numbers to which you can apply meaningful financial analysis.

About the Author

Yoshihiro Murata was born in Kyoto, where his family had been running the Kikunoi restaurant for two generations. After graduating from university, he spent some years honing his culinary skills in a restaurant in Nagoya, then returned to his family business in 1976. Now, he is the owner/chef of three restaurants in Kyoto and Tokyo, and the proud recipient of a total of seven stars from the Michelin Guide (three for the main restaurant in Kyoto and two stars each for his other two). Murata is the author of Kaiseki, published by Kodansha International.

A magnificent, user-friendly Japanese cook book that makes it very simple for those who want to learn Japanese homecooked meals.

When it comes to Japanese recipe books, especially from a notable chef, part of me usually gets very excited and the other half me feels a bit of skepticism.

Having reviewed many Japanese culinary books from notable chef's to at-home mothers who wanted to share their own recipes, when it comes to chef's, you usually get beautiful coffee table books with beautiful photography but when it comes to the actual recipe and ingredients, these books are tailored to those who are practicing chef's and have the cutlery to partake in the dish, those with access to Japanese ingredients.

But for some, they are so world renown, especially from traveling the globe that they use the finest ingredients that they have come in contact with and it's how they create their dishes for their well-known restaurant typically reserved for the haute bourgeoisie and those that are looking for delicious food with the best ingredients.

And it's great to read how some chef's accomplish such dishes, may they get the spice from India, Malaysia, or somewhere in Japan that even local chef's have no access to. But that's how things are and the fact they are willing to share their culinary secrets is wonderful but for those of us living in the United States without access to a Japan Town, China Town let alone an Asian store that specializes in spices, cooking these dishes may prove to be too difficult.

So, when I finished going through "Japanese Home Cooking with Master Chef Murata", needless to say, I had a smile on my face. A smile because here is a book from a master chef from Japan, very well known and yet, he doesn't feel the need to make things difficult for the reader and those wanting to learn how to cook Japanese home cooking. He keeps things simple, basic and there is no request for one to have access to hard-to-find spices. All he asks is for one to have access to soy sauce, chicken broth, corn starch, possibly sake, peanut butter and other ingredients that you can find at your local supermarket.

Although not hardbound, you get clear instructions to the dish along with full color photos. Although some may have been used to hardbound Japanese cook books, "Japanese Home Cooking" is still a wonderful book from the master chef. Want to learn how to prepare seared rice balls with bacon soy sauce? No problem. He teaches you how to make the marinated sauce (2 tbsp of soy sauce, 4 tbsp of sake, 1 tbsp sugar) and mix this with the bacon in a pan over low heat and stirring until all liquid is gone. Then add the lemon peel, lemon juice and toasted sesame seeds. Then you get your rice and put 1/4 of rice on an 8 inch plastic wrap and place the bacon mixture to the center of the rice, shape the rice to a ball and create a patty. Then unwrap the rice ball and place on a pan and sear until well brown on both sides. So, easy to do!

And this goes for plenty of the recipes featured throughout this book. There are plenty of Japanese home cooked meals featured in this book. May it be a salad, sauteed dish, deep-fried dish, steamed dish, simmered dish, hot pots, rice and noodles and soups. From tempura to sukiyaki, tofu recipes to supplemental recipes on how to make your own rice to making a dashi stock and sauces.

I have to say that this is one Japanese cook book that I absolutely loved because Chef Murata kept things simple. No need to make things complicated and I like it when chefs can at least put themselves in the shoes of the consumer and knowing that not everyone, especially around the world have access to the best spices or access to hard-to-find vegetables in America or the other country that typically found in East Asia or other countries. And personally, I respect that a master chef is willing to take his time to reach out to that consumer for home cooking, even though they are so used to making extravagant dishes for their own customers at their restaurants.

"Japanese Home Cooking with Master Chef Murata" is clearly for those of us who are passionate about Japanese food, but food done easily with clear and concise recipes and easy-to-find ingredients in which anyone can find at a local supermarket.

You rarely find these type of cookbooks, especially coming from a well-renown master chef from Japan, created and tailored for a person regardless of cooking experience and location. He breaks things down simply and makes sure that eating Japanese food doesn't have to be so difficult. Murata wants you to experience, experiment and the better you get, try your own variations from the recipes he has provided in this cookbook.

A magnificent, user-friendly Japanese cookbook and easily deserving of five stars!

Easy and Delicious

I really like this cookbook. About a year ago, I bought two Japanese cookbooks - this one, and Basic Japanese Cooking by Vasallo. Now, a year later, I find that this is the book I turn to. The recipes really are quick and easy, and almost all of those I've tried are keepers. It's simple comfort food Japanese style.

However, I have to grade it down a star because it seems to contain a few errors. There are at least three recipes that call TBSPs. when it should be teaspoons. If your wasabi paste is anything like what I bought at the Japanese grocery store, you shouldn't put a TBSP in any of these dishes! A half tsp. was enough to give Onion and Crispy Bacon Salad a good kick - The recipe called for 1 TBSP. The 2 TBSP called for in Daikon with Wasabi-Soy dressing would blow your head off. And 3 TBSP. sugar would have turned Chicken and Mushroom Rice into a dessert. These are probably errors that crept in during the translation. If you have enough cooking sense to know if something seems way off, you won't have a problem.

I am delighted to have a bunch of delicious new dishes in my weeknight repertoire. The following ranged from very good to great and are on my list to make again:
Potato Kimpira with Bacon (awesome)
Green Beans with Sesame Sauce
Kabocha Squash and Bacon Stew
Sweet and Sour Chicken Wings
Onion and Crispy Bacon Salad
Chicken and Mushroom Rice (with adjustments - more chicken, mushrooms, soy sauce, onion and 3 tsp. sugar.)
Chicken and Egg on Rice (saut� the onions first)
Salmon and Miso Hot Pot

That's a lot of successes from a 60 recipe cookbook! The only recipes I did not like were Daikon with Wasabi-Soy Dressing and Chicken & Onion Noodle Soup.

One last plus is that every recipe is accompanied by a full-page photograph of the finished product.

deliciously easy

i borrowed this book from the library and liked it so much i bought it. the recipes are super easy and yummy. there are some no cook dishes that have been my go to dinners on busy nights. nice pictures, clear directions. i did have to buy a couple of ingredients that i didn't have on hand-- bonito flakes and sake.
