Chapter 1: Stealth Marketing
Using this new technology to analyze the contents of shopping baskets at check-out, a major Canadian retailer discovered that when customers buy auto polish, they often buy Q-Tips for cleaning the air-conditioning vents. Consequently they positioned the Q-Tips in the auto polish section, and sales of Q-Tips sky-rocketed. Another discovered that when husbands are sent out of an evening to buy disposable diapers, they invariably return with beer as well. By relocating the beer next to the disposable diapers, and the disposable diapers next to the beer, sales of both items have improved in logarithmic fashion. The Internal Revenue Service has announced it will no longer conduct random audits. It too is using this new information technology to identify "non-compliant" taxpayers with a pin-point accuracy never before possible.
