A Very Valuable Book

I really appreciate Elizabeth Spring's accessible, down to earth, yet deep & soulful approach to astrology. I found this book to be very easy to read, as it is engaging, well-organized and she writes with a straightforward, sometimes humorous, and always insightful style. This book is truly valuable to me, as I am beginning on the journey of learning more in depth about astrology, and I feel that her work offers a way in which I can tune into a richer awareness of myself on a soul level. I love her Jungian perspective, as it comes from a place of honoring all aspects of our experience as a tool for growth & expansion, which feels empowering & uplifting. With the mainstream misunderstanding of so many astrological happenings as "good" or "bad," it is refreshing to hear from an astrologer that there is true purpose, meaning, & gifts through the challenges. With the way the book is laid out, it is also easy to refresh your knowledge at any time in your learning process.

This is Elizabeth Spring's third book on astrology. As always she is well-informed, lucid and innovative in her approach. In this book she teachs readers how to use their rising sign to determine planet placements in houses of their horoscope. She also covers major astrological transition phases. Spring always respects her reader's intelligence, encouraging the reader to use astrology thoughtfully - as a tool for self-empowerment. Rather than passively relying on astrologers and developing a dependency on outside interpretation, she encourages the reader to be pro-active and become an expert on their own potential. A great read.

All of the elements that make a story worth telling and a pleasure to read are captured in this glimpse of life behind the leaves of tea. Steeped in history as verdant as the delicate floral aroma of a Darjeeling harvested from a first flush, the reader meanders thru the authors idyllic life on the plantation where he began his career. Ostensibly hired as the engineer, he finds beneath the mechanics of operating this large estate lays a world far more captivating for the love, loss, and friendship that was to unfold. Little did he grasp its full meaning at the time, A Planter's Love Story now captures through detailed recollections and wonderful photo's an enchantment that would last a lifetime. About the Author
Terry Barrett is Professor of Art Education, with a joint appointment in the Department of Art, at The Ohio State University, where he is the recipient of a distinguished teaching award for courses in criticism and aesthetics within education. He has authored four books: Interpreting Art: Reflecting, Wondering and Responding; Criticizing Art: Understanding the Contemporary (2nd ed.); Criticizing Photographs: An Introduction to Understanding Images (4th ed.); and Talking about Student Art. He edited the anthology Lessons for Teaching Art Criticism, published articles in Aesthetic Education, Afterimage, Art Education, Exposure, Camera-Lucida, Dialogue, Cultural Research in Art Education, New Advocate, New Art Examiner, Studies in Art Education, Teaching Artist Journal, Theory into Practice, Visual Arts Research, and many chapters in edited books. He is an art critic in education for the Ohio Arts Council, consults museum education departments, juries exhibitions, and conducts workshops on studio critiques and writing.

A straight-forward introduction to art criticism

A wonderful book. Boy, i was dragged through galleries and museums by my parents throughout the 60's and 70's, seeing things I thought interesting, some beautiful, some scary, some outright nonsensical. I never got to understand nothing, though I felt the impact of "the better stuff". Mr. Barrett does a wonderful job in being sincere and easy to understand as he, with impressively up-to-date examples, puts forth the meaning behind those formulae of formalism, modernism, post-modernism and the like. He carefully introduces techniques of criticism which are acknowledged as "best practices", but always underlines that other avenues will take us to excellence, too. I definitely appreciate what he covers under the "feminism" and "multiculturism" headlines, cos when we get to see it, we rarely have the nomenclatura to understand it properly. This is not just a book for someone who in earnest wants to make a living off "criticizing art", but for anyone young (in mind) enough to set out on the adventure to enjoy, understand and recommend contemporary art with some kind of vision for the betterment of mankind. The art, Mr. Barrett tells us, is all there - it's now up to us to make something with it.

I am a high school art teacher. This book has been very helpful to me, in that I better understand the criteria for theories in contemporary art and I am better able to communicate the criteria to my students. It's an easy and interesting read.
