This is how instruction manuals should be written

I edit and lay out books for a living, and I supplement my brief formal education by self-teaching from books. I have no fewer than 15 such manuals on the shelf over my Mac, on subjects ranging from HTML to the Adobe Creative Suite to QuickBooks and beyond. I wish Claudia McCue had written every one of them. Her writing is clear and concise -- she clearly knows her subject matter AND how people learn. In the editorial part of my career I've worked on hundreds of nonfiction titles, and I can assure you that this is a rare combination. The writing is not only informative, it's engaging (and frequently funny); this is the only manual I've ever read cover to cover, like a novel.

The author's explanations of complex subjects are wonderful. Until now, for example, I've never really understood concepts like trapping and RIP-ping. I've always absorbed the minimum I needed to know while the rest of the explanation turned into the "wahh-wahh" adult voices in a Peanuts cartoon. Whether that's due to the density of my own skull or the poor explanations I was getting, I don't know -- what I do know is that this author's explanations have effectively closed the circuit for me on these subjects. I actually get them now. And then there are the chapters with production tips for each relevant program in the Creative Suite -- they're like mini-Master Classes. I can't express how much my workflow has improved after reading this book in general and these chapters in particular.

After a couple of months on my desk, my copy is dog-eared and bristling with sticky-notes. I've referred to it for different questions on each of my last three print projects (two trade paperbacks and a coffee-table book), and I expect I'll be referring to it for many projects to come.

A must have wealth of knowledge!

Claudia has put together a catalog of information that any designer who prints must read!

Her vast knowledge in the printing industry reflects in each chapter with easy to grasp, pertinent information. This has become my go to book in my new career as a Graphic Designer/ Prepress Operator.
Trust me, this is a must have for any designer to keep with them.
A great guide for the various aspects of print design whether you're working in house printing or sending them off to a press. They will thank you greatly if you follow Claudia's guides for setting up files and artwork, and you might even save yourself or your company some money.
She is an InDesign Master so you couldn't learn from a better teacher. Her tips on how to utilize the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite are great.
Just quit reading this review and go buy this book if you are thinking about it, it will pay for itself with its content.

About the Author
�A.J. (Lonnie) Strickland received a BS in Math and Physics from the University of Georgia, an MS in Industrial Management from Georgia Institute of Technology, and a PhD from Georgia State university. He currently holds the rank of Professor of Strategic Management in the Graduate School of Business at the University of Alabama. He has done extensive consulting and research work. In recent years, he was honored with the Outstanding Professor Award for the Graduate School of Business, and was the recipient of the Outstanding Commitment to Teaching Award for the University of Alabama.

John E. Gamble is currently Associate Dean and Professor of Management in the Mitchell College of Business at the University of South Alabama. His teaching specialty at USA is strategic management and he also conducts a course in strategic management in Germany, which is sponsored by the University of Applied Sciences in Worms. Dr. Gamble's research interests center on strategic issues in entrepreneurial, health care, and manufacturing settings. His work has been published in various scholarly journals and he is the author or co-author of more than 50 case studies published in an assortment of strategic management and strategic marketing texts. He has done consulting on industry and market analysis for clients in a diverse mix of industries. Professor Gamble received his Ph.D. in management from the University of Alabama in 1995. Dr. Gamble also has a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Alabama.

I rented this book from Amazon, and I would tell you that I liked it so much that I will be using it for future references. I used it for my Strategic Management class for Supervision and Management.
I had to do about four presentations from the cases of this book. I enjoyed the cases in this book, I even read most of them. like I said I will be using this version or future versions of this book for references.

This wasn't my favorite textbook, but I did enjoy the thorough case studies at the end of the book. I used those more than the chapter contents by far. Regardless, this was a mandatory purchase. I did appreciate the Amazon rental option as I am someone who doesn't like to hold onto unnecessary items.

I love this book simply because it give and idea how technology, science and society are all linked to each other and how they impact to our lives. I also have professor who teaching me this class and she also wrote this book. Recommend it! by the way kindle version more comfortable to read because navigation thru chapters.

as an introduction this is a horrible failure

As introductory works go, this book is terrible. While the authors are honest about the fact that they are sociologists, they are not at all clear on what kinds of biases this results in in their treatment. Although they manage passingly well to enthuse the reader for the field, they over-sociologize almost everything, spend large amounts of text on remarks that are either not pertinent to the discussion or too vague to be meaningful statements, while they meanwhile quickly mention other topics that are far more controversial than they imply.
They suggest that they do not want to get "caught up" in the science wars, but do suggest that they see science as to be understood only in social terms, while being largely uncritical of the notion that the social is just as much of a social construct as everything else, preferring to reify it instead, as though it is the "rock bottom" of useful/meaningful analysis of the social, intersubjective world. They try to mention far too many subjects that they don't actually treat in any amount of detail, which is very noticeable once you've noticed it once or twice, and similarly their argumentation for asserting that certain processes play a role is almost always horribly vague, while the examples they supply are often not even to the point.
Basically, it reads as though they have no idea yet how to construct a convincing argument, or that they prefer giving vague hints (about how "power structures" control, or determine, or whatever a field, as though all power structures really are the same, have the same influence, etc.) over actual analysis. This, however, is not the way to do science. It's fine that influence is hard to measure directly, but this does not mean that you have a licence to write anything. Insightful analysis is a virtue in any part of life (except 'religion', i.e. Dogma).
While the authors seem more or less sympathetic, I cannot conscionably recommend their book, and especially not as an introduction into STS.

Not a very good read

For starters, this was a required textbook for a college course I was taking and the instructor is an author.
This book is mostly a cause and effect piece on technology and 75% of it is common sense like "typewriters destroyed job opportunities for scribes." The other 25% is opinion that is presented as fact and backed up with almost no evidence.

As I was forced to read this garbage, I just kept getting the notion that the authors thought what they were writing was so incredibly profound instead of it being the most obvious concepts I have ever had to read.

It did however ship very quickly and was in nice condition and stuff. This would have been a great experience if I had just accidentally gotten a Dr. Suess book instead because it might have actually broaden my knowledge base more so.

I'd recommend this book to a 10-12 year old with a great vocabulary because the concepts are geared for that age but the word choice is a little pretentious. But if you have to take this for a college course I would just search for it online and use CTRL-F whenever it gets referenced in assignments. I took the class online and wish that I had done that.

One of the most important and insightful books I've ever read.

Don Catherall is the first writer I've found who cuts to the chase of what the real issues are in couples conflicts: whether people feel emotionally safe, or unsafe, in their interactions with their partners.
Years ago I was picking the brains of a friend who was a seasoned therapist, and asked if he worked with couples. He made a dour face and replied, "Only if I can't get out of it." I became very curious and asked him why he said that, and he replied: "Well, usually by the time people have recognized that they need help, it's like they've put a couple of fresh eggs in a plastic baggie, then thrown it against a wall...and then they bring it to me, and ask me to put it back together. Almost always the best I can do is to help them come to an amicable ending to their relationship."
I was surprised by my friend's pessimistic comments, and intrigued enough to look at many models of couples treatment. I discovered that the success rate was disturbingly low for most treatment modalities. This book helps explain why that's been true for so long.
Couples therapists have historically focused on what appeared to be the problems; almost never getting to the heart of the issues that conflicted couples are struggling with, often desperately (and frequently fatally for their relationships).
Catherall makes a compelling case for why bringing an understanding of Attachment Theory, Affect Theory (based on the little-known work of the brilliant psychologist, Silvan Tomkins), and shame dynamics makes for a much more effective treatment model. Although this book is aimed at therapists working with couples, it's written in a clear, easily understood manner. Any reasonably intelligent lay person who wants to understand why relationships are so difficult - and what can be done to help them become more loving and emotionally supportive - will find much wisdom in this book.
Although I don't work with couples, I've found that applying the simple but powerful insights Catherall offers regarding the issue of emotional safety, to any relationship (not just romantic partnerships) helps build understanding and a sense of mutuality with anyone I'm trying to connect with.

Excellent Book. A Must read for Attachment Based Couples Therapists!

Rightfully so, attachment theory is currently a hot topic in the couples therapy literature. Catherall takes a stand that it is not always attachment issues at the root of couples relational problems. He states that esteem issues (feelings of shame or wounds to the sense of Self) also play a role in couples relational problems. Emotional Safety presents a model of therapy that helps the therapist discern which issues are attachment related and which issues are due to threats to esteem. Now that I think about it, his discussion of how shame plays a role in couples conflicts makes the book worth the purchase price alone.

His use of Script Theory is helpful in understanding what is going on inside of each partner as they engage in conflict.

Another great thing about this book is that you don't have to learn a new model of couples therapy. I have been able to easily incorporate Catherall's ideas into my own style of doing therapy. My couples are responding well too. Not only do partners feel more understood when we separate attachment issues from esteem issues, it gives them a broader way of looking at what is going on between them, which in turn, gives them more avenues for change.
