Where the Bluebird Sings to the Lemonade Springs: Living and Writing in the West (Modern Library Classics), by Wallace Stegner

Nominated for a National Book Critics Circle award, Where the Bluebird Sings to the Lemonade Springs gathers together Wallace Stegner’s most important and memorable writings on the American West: its landscapes, diverse history, and shifting identity; its beauty, fragility, and power. With subjects ranging from the writer’s own “migrant childhood” to the need to protect what remains of the great western wilderness (which Stegner dubs “the geography of hope”) to poignant profiles of western writers such as John Steinbeck and Norman Maclean, this collection is a riveting testament to the power of place. At the same time it communicates vividly the sensibility and range of this most gifted of American writers, historians, and environmentalists.

Stegner's love of unspoilt nature and of the American West shines forth in these 17 graceful essays. This book by the Pulitzer Prize and NBA winner is a National Book Critics Circle Award nominee for criticism.

From Kirkus Reviews
Western Americana and literary history by the Pulitzer-winning novelist. Now 80, Stegner here reviews his life in part, the West as writers have written about it, its landscape and the ever-changing effect of humanity upon it, and so on. Stegner believes that the West is finally coming into its own as a literary entity distinct from what eastern critics have found in it. Even so, he warns, ``without a more developed and cohesive society than the West, in its short life and against all the handicaps of revolutionary change and dispersion, has been able to grow--and without a native audience for its native arts--there may come a time in a writer's career when the clutch of the imagination will no longer take hold on the materials that are most one's own.'' That sentence points up Stegner's strengths and flaws: It digs into his subject of change and fragility both in landscape and citizenry, but does so in a voice more academic than earthy. Ever in search of the loamy detail, one reads through this collection of recent magazine essays and introductions to Stegner's own and others' books and finds less appeal to the senses than the wise overview, rich in itself but not rich in words. The best essay by far is a sigh-heavy memoir of his mother, ``Letter, Much Too Late,'' written some 50 years after her death, with her breath and heartbeat moved into the reader's own chest. Stegner's friendships with writers such as Walter Van Tilburg Clark and Wendell Berry ring with praise, as do his comments on John Steinbeck, Norman Maclean, and George Stewart. And one feels deeply rewarded by Stegner's wisdom about population shifts, the five or six main types of landscape, and his words about conservation, deadly dams, and the death of the desert. Absolutely worthwhile, but highly charged only here and there. -- Copyright 1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Where the Bluebird Sings to the Lemonade Springs
By Catherine E. Crawford
What makes Westerners different from other Americans? How has western life amplified the way we think, act, and define ourselves across America? If you're intrigued by these questions, Wallace Stegner's Where the Bluebird Sings to the Lemonade Springs has some interesting answers for you. This book of essays takes its title from the song "In the Big Rock Candy Mountains," a ditty that romanticized the West as a garden of Eden fated to bloom in the opportunistic hand of man. But the real story, as Stegner reveals, has been different. And that story is one we need to know today.

Stegner loved the West and saw its true nature. So although he talks about the tragedies of western development, often brought on by politics and real estate boosterism, he also presents the West's triumphs, especially through environmental activism that preserved much western land. The book has three sections. The first recaps Stegner's childhood in the West, which earned him the authority to speak on the region. The second contains essays that explore how western culture developed. His comments on the cowboy's origins are fascinating, and his capsule history of conservation perfect for readers who want that subject summarized.

The final section deals with western literature and its writers, including Jack London, John Steinbeck, Mary Austin, Joan Didion, Walter Clark, Scott Momaday, Linda Hogan, and others. The essay "The Sense of Place" offers wisdoms about western living that resonate today. Stegner said we must stop raiding and running from the earth. We need to be quiet once in the while. And we need to develop a sense of belonging to--not owning--the land. This book is for readers hungry to live along those lines.

To Let Go the Color Green
By Heath Nieddu
As 2008 rolled to a close in the early days of December I gripped the steering wheel of a U-Haul truck as it shimmied through the plains on I-80, heading towards Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, and finally Oregon. Virginia and Florida were falling to my stern. Right before I left for our big move I read Stegner's "Angle of Repose." Maybe I left because of "Repose." Once I settled at my destination, Portland, I visited Powell's book store and purchased, "Where the Bluebird Sings to the Lemonade Springs: Living and Writing in the West." I'll make no pretensions about being able to impartially point out this anthology's strengths or weaknesses. My appreciation for Stegner's work is so profound my judgment is dimmed. I'm still in receive mode, and my thoughts float around digesting what I find.

Previously here, one reviewer retained sobriety and concluded that Stegner's Lemonade Springs was insular and xenophobic. I think there's some truth that Stegner's work had a geographic focus, and maybe a moral purpose, but that wasn't because he believed in the infallibility of the West, but rather because he loved it with its faults. Perhaps he felt his generation under-appreciated, or more likely, misunderstood his Western context. I think that the reviewer's analysis may have more weight if she were from the West, but being from Texas, maybe she was surprised by someone from outside the lone star state celebrating their home.

Stegner's work could be considered advocation, but it is also approachable from all corners because he was inspired by the good, and wounded by the bad. His precision in defining the rough, scrubby edges of his cultural landscape reveal more passion than desire for domination. Stegner not only attempted to define, but genuinely wanted to share whatever nuggets he felt he picked up along the way. Maya Angelou admitted to an audience in New York this year that she was a teacher who writes, and this is a sentiment expressed in Stegner's writing, as well as his years as a professor.

The sense of place is a strong backdrop, maybe too much so, but he also calms us with easy prose, allays our fears about the sometimes biographical nature of fiction, convinces us we're not alone in familial pain of a certain type, and provides lingering analogies about his art.

One question about his work for me that this volume didn't answer was his view of God and spirituality. He said he was, "not-so-Christian." At times he admired the Mormons, but not completely. He probably meant for it to be this way, not wanting to drift into the ambiguity of the Transcendentalists. I think that these lingering questions become the most important about his work: Did he believe that Nature, dominating the Western man's experience, was a reflection of something higher, or the end itself? Did he view his existence along an arch that began and ended in the arid desert, or did he see the Divine as he gazed across the Great Divide?
I don't think that it was his nature to give it all away, but he did give us Lemonade Springs: a literary gem, a completely engaging book, and a must-read for those interested in learning about living and writing in the West.

The American west.
By Wesley L. Janssen
"Easterners are constantly being surprised and somehow offended that California's summer hills are gold, not green. We are creatures shaped by our experiences; we like what we know, more than we know what we like. ... Sagebrush is an acquired taste."
Stegner taught writing at the University of Wisconsin and at Harvard, but he had a strong sense of place and his place was the West. He accepted a position at Stanford University where he spent many years, and became, what many consider to be, 'the dean of Western writing' (by which we do not mean that he wrote "Westerns"). In this volume, Stegner sacks the Hollywood myths, and addresses the far more fascinating realities of the West. Featured here is a studied and caring investigation of what lies between the 98th meridian and the Pacific Ocean; of the land's great beauty and vulnerability to human foolishness. The compilation of essays also includes the author's reflections on his own life and work in the West, and examines critically the work of several significant literary "witnesses" of the American West. He reminds the reader of what criticism is: "A critic ... is not a synthesizer but an analyzer. He picks apart, he lifts a few cells onto a slide and puts a coverglass over them... His is a useful function and done well, ... may even give the reader the illusion of understanding both the product and the process. But ... whatever they can analyze has to be dead before it can be dissected ... critical analysis explains everything but the mystery of literary creation."
If you enjoy the works of John Steinbeck or Norman Maclean, or the powerful but fragile beauty of western lands, the essays collected in the Lemonade Springs are highly recommended.

The Theory and Practice of Sustainable Engineering is appropriate to use in sustainable engineering classes for both majors and non-majors. This textbook was designed as the basis for a course in itself, but it can be used to provide modules in existing courses, or as a supplementary text in sustainable engineering, green engineering, industrial ecology, sustainability law and policy, and environmental courses. Although this is a book about sustainable engineers, it is meant for a broader audience. This is not just an engineering text for engineering students, but also an engineering text for non-engineers who want to better understand the world, and be able to rationally, ethically, and responsibly respond to its challenges and emergent behaviors.

Sustainable engineering is learning how to engineer responsibly and professionally in the Anthropocene: the Age of the Human. This book sketches out the cultural, social, institutional, and environmental context within which engineering and, more broadly, technology systems are now situated. It provides frameworks to facilitate understanding, communication, and the solving of highly complex problems with significant technological dimensions — all in the name of generating more capable professionals competent in their chosen field, who are able to integrate other disciplines to address complex adaptive systems.

Pricy, but worth it.
By Christina
I was fortunate enough to study with Dr. Allenby and read this book in the process. Aside from supplying several relevant and intriguing perspectives on the social, economic, and environmental impact of technology, it is a fairly easy read.

If you have any interest in engineering, or are interested in sustainability (including what exactly the word means), this is an excellent book.

I hate the price
By David Sloan Wilson
I was going to buy this book until I saw the price. No way I'm going to pay over $100 for the kindle edition. What was the publisher thinking? This is marketing at its worst. I will avoid this book on principle.

Very good, but little more than a copy of the original.

I really enjoyed the first Pink Pill, but I think this story has too much in common with it. I'm still a fan of the author though and I look forward to more of his (her?) work.

Review
"If I were a student once again starting out in my micropalaeontological career, this would have to be on my shopping list...It is books like this that will hopefully catch the interest of undergraduates and persuade them to continue within the field and regenerate our ageing skills pool." (Newsletter of Micropalaeontology, September 2005)

"Overall, I found the second edition of Microfossils to be an excellent book and one I highly recommend....[it] will make an excellent text for an introductory course in micropaleontology, or as a supplement to an invertebrate paleontology course." (American Association of Stratigraphic Palynologists Newsletter, April 2006)

"...a very valuabel re-addition to the micropalaeontological literature available to undergraduate students..." (Journal of Quaternary Science, June 2006)

From the Back Cover
Microfossils is the definitive guide to all the major microfossil groups. In recent years a greater understanding of species’ concepts and stratigraphical ranges, advances in the completeness of the microfossil record and the advent of molecular techniques in classification have led to major changes in the classification and applications of microfossils. This new edition of Microfossils has been restructured and rewritten to take into account these significant advances to provide a complete guide to taxonomy, phylogeny, ecology and palaeoecology of microfossils and their applications.

This new edition includes:

  • major revisions incorporating the latest available research
  • a new section on isotopes, and on applications in stratigraphy, geothermometry and evolution
  • coverage of the major developments in the use of microfossils in palaeo-oceanography and palaeoclimatology
  • photographs to support the line drawings

Microfossils is an essential reference tool and laboratory guide for undergraduate and graduate students of micropalaeontology.

About the Author
Howard Armstrong has been researching micropalaeontology for twenty years and has published extensively on applied micropalaeontology, numerical biostratigraphy, conodont palaeobiology and dispersal biogeography. His research currently focuses on environmental and biological patterns and processes associated with Palaeozoic glaciations. He is Senior Lecturer in Micropalaeontology at the University of Durham.

Martin Brasier began research as a marine biologist aboard HMS Fox in 1970, mapping the microbial ecology of Caribbean reefs and algal mats. The author is well known for the first edition of Microfossils and for his work on early biosphere evolution, integrating microfossils, biogeochemistry and chemostratigraphy from the earliest signs of life in the Archaean through to the Cambrian explosion of multicellular forms. He maintains a special interest in the metabolism and evolution of bacterial and protist fossil groups, and has worked with NASA on the protocols for recognition of the earliest life on Earth and beyond. He is currently Professor of Palaeobiology at the University of Oxford.

I Shall Wear Midnight: Discworld Book 38, (Discworld Childrens Book 5), by Terry Pratchett

A man with no eyes. No eyes at all. Two tunnels in his head.... It's not easy being a witch, and it's certainly not all whizzing about on broomsticks, but Tiffany Aching - teen witch - is doing her best.

Until something evil wakes up, something that stirs up all the old stories about nasty old witches, so that just wearing a pointy hat suddenly seems a very bad idea.

Worse still, this evil ghost from the past is hunting down one witch in particular. He's hunting for Tiffany. And he's found her....

A fabulous Discworld title filled with witches and magic and told in the inimitable Terry Pratchett style, I Shall Wear Midnight is the fourth Discworld title to feature Tiffany and her tiny, fightin', boozin' pixie friends, the Nac Mac Feegle (aka The Wee Free Men).

In which Tiffany Aching faces a poison
By E. M. Van Court
Tiffany Aching is facing an insidious evil; "poison goes where poison is welcome". Not a literal poison, but a poison of souls that causes the people who need witches to question, misinterpret, and attack people like Tiffany. Tiffany spends her days helping people, she goes to "feed them as is hungry, clothe them as is naked, and speak up for them as has no voices". What comes for her is blind and hateful.

To add to this, the Baron is dying, his son is under the spell of someone other than Tiffany, Tiffany has to face the bane of witches throughout the ages, the other witches are watching and judging her, and, worst luck, the Nac Mac Feegle are ready help her again. Along the way, she meets the genius behind Boffo, a skeleton that is much happier with a teddy bear than without, a young woman with a unique gift for languages, and Roland's (the son of the dying baron) fiance and her mother, the Duchess.

Dark, with humorous highlights. Sir Terry Pratchett addresses the worst aspect of the human soul; petty and willfully ignorant hatred for those to whom you are indebted. Someone spends their days healing and giving to others, so, of course, the human reaction is sullen rage and resentment. At the same time, the Nac Mac Feegle are in fine form. Jeannie, the Kelda of the Wee Free Men is growing into her role as their matriarch (and mother to most) of the clan. Rob Anybody has apparently mastered the hiddlins (secrets) of the explaining, the heart of being husband to the Kelda, but truly lets forth his rage before the tale is told. And of course, there is always Daft Willie and his pal, Horace the cheese.

This one was much darker than Pratchett's other books, cutting straight to what is worst in humanity and hauling it out into the daylight, then on to the fire. The themes and imagery are very powerful, and should have any reader stopping to think about where this has been seen, and what it is really about. Without spoilers, there is light at the end, but this is in question at times.

Deeply moving and absolutely brilliant.

A masterpiece
By Panos Dionysopoulos
An absolutely beautiful book. It actually brought me to tears on three separate occasions (I will admit to being a bit of a sap)

I have been reading Terry Pratchett's books for 16 years since I first discovered 'Sourcery' in my high school library and then went back and caught up with the others and I truly believe this is his best. At least, it resonated the most with me.

Considering at the point he wrote it his Alzheimer's had reached the point where he could no longer type but needs to dictate his words, this is an incredible achievement. The man is still sharp as a whip and an incredible storywriter to boot.

I haven't loved one of his books this much since I read 'Maskerade' and I loved that book an awful lot.. as I did 'Witches Abroad' so maybe I'm just partial to the witch related stories? Nevertheless if you are a fan, you owe it to yourself to read this. After reading the previous three Tiffany Aching books of course as they all tie in together.

Once again, I love this book and it has made my top ten of favourite books ever.

As far as the Kindle edition goes, it was just fine. Formatting was great, easy to read, all the illustrations translated quite nicely and only one spelling mistake.

If you've liked the other Tiffany Aching novels, you'll like this also
By T. Simons
This is the latest entry in Pratchett's four-book sub-series about a young witch, Tiffany Aching, as she grows up and learns, appropriately enough for her trade, to be a wise woman. (There are upwards of thirty or forty "Discworld" books total, which cluster into subgroups around individual characters). While you could certainly start here if you wanted to, new readers might find it more rewarding to begin with The Wee Free Men, the first in Tiffany's sub-series, followed by A Hat Full of Sky and then Wintersmith, before proceeding to this one.

This is billed as a children's / young adult book, although little sets it apart from Pratchett's other fantasy except for some (very) slight bowdlerizations; primarily, this is a young adult book because the heroine is a young adult, and it deals with issues that young adults have to deal with. Like the Harry Potter books, the content and tone of the Tiffany series have been maturing ever so slightly with each book to match the advancing maturity of the protagonist, and while this one's still suitable for younger readers, it definitely contains a few jokes likely to fly over their heads (at least unless some other source has educated them). Tiffany herself is portrayed as very mature for her age - a portrayal deliberate on Pratchett's part, I believe, as Tiffany is exactly as mature as most people that age tend to think they are, and almost as mature as she herself wants to be.

Each volume in the series sets Tiffany a particular problem to resolve; here the problem (s) are innuendo, rumour, gossip, romantic rivalries, and pointless mob hatred, things that many if not most teenage girls will identify with (even if in Tiffany's case the "witch hunt" she has to deal with is somewhat more literal). Tiffany's prior romance with Roland, the son of the local Baron, has clearly ended, and Roland's is about to marry Letitia, the daughter of a (very obnoxious) Duchess; meanwhile, some of the residents of the Chalk are stirring up hatred and accusations against Tiffany, and stalking her is the Cunning Man, a personification of suspicion, envious rage, hatred, mob violence, and the witch hunt.

Pratchett's typical mastery is still present here, his wit and his wisdom; the only real sign of his advancing illness is that there's a sense, especially in the novel's conclusion, that this may be the final Tiffany Aching novel and the final novel of his Witches series (if only because it features a cameo appearance from a character we haven't seen since the very first Witches-series novel, Equal Rites, first published twenty-plus years ago). All in all, it's an excellent book, fully as good as anything else he's written, and a book that will definitely please fans of the series and new readers alike.

Magnifying Mirrors: Women, Surrealism, and Partnership, by Renee Riese Hubert

Although notorious for their idiosyncrasies, the surrealists revived artistic collaboration as an honorable and productive practice. Most of the famous surrealists were men, yet almost all were involved with women artists who were much more thansources of romantic inspiration. Precious little attention has been given to this most intricate of partnerships.

Magnifying Mirrors is the first study of the complex partnerships that stimulated and provoked these men and women. Each couple collaborated in its own unique way according to the varying importance ascribed to aesthetic, social, and political preoccupations.

The twelve couples whom Rene riese Hubert describes are Sophie Taeuber and Hans Arp; Valentine and Roland Penrose; Leonora Carrington and Max Ernst; Unica Zurn and Hans Bellmer; Kay Sage and Yves Tanguy; Lee Miller and Man Ray; Aliced Rahon and Wolfgang Paalen; Remedios Varo and Benjamin Peret; Hannah Hoch and Raoul Hausmann; and Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Often the woman in a partnership, far younger than her male companion, had just begun her career as an artist and had entered the relationship as a junior partner in need of support and guidance. Not surprisingly, her association usually resulted in, and often ended with, an intense assertion of independence. In her examination of these partnerships, Hubert focuses on comparing the art that the couples produced, apart or together.

Review
"Professor Hubert gives us a whole new understanding of Surrealism and of the way male and female artists of the movement worked together or side by side to produce astonishing works. Hubert has opened up a vast area that will surely be a subject of major discussion in the years to come."—Marjorie Perloff, author of The Futurist Moment (Marjorie Perloff )

About the Author
The author of well over a hundred articles, texts, and books of poetry, Rene Riese Hubert is a professor emerita of comparative literature and French at the University of California, Irvine.

Disappointing
By lisaleo (Lisa Yount)
Andr Breton and other theorists of the Surrealist movement viewed women as muses and subjects of art, not as artists in their own right--yet many male Surrealists had affairs with, or even married, women who ultimately established substantial artistic reputations of their own. A careful study of the personal and artistic relationships within these couples could do much to illuminate, not only the work of the artists themselves, but the gender issues that affected artists, especially women artists, during the period of the 1930s through 1950s. I hoped that this book would present such a study, but unfortunately, it does not. It provides surprisingly little biographical information on the individuals or on their personal interaction, focusing mainly on detailed analysis--but only sometimes direct comparison--of specific works. I was further frustrated to see that most of the illustrations are in black and white, and only about half of the works described in detail appear at all.

I sampled two essays, those on Kay Sage-Yves Tanguy and on Lee Miller-Man Ray. The Sage-Tanguy essay was particularly unsatisfying. It gives almost no biographical information on either artist, and some of what it does give is inaccurate. It analyzes Sage's works in seemingly random order and compares them with those of Tanguy in only a few instances. The chapter on Miller and Ray was better, but concentrates more on their fashion photographs than on their more obviously Surrealist works.

Hubert is to be praised for including some less well known couples, such as Alice Rahon and Wolfgang Paalen, along with famous ones such as Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. However, her list contains some striking omissions, most notably Max Ernst-Dorothea Tanning. She covers Ernst in connection with Leonora Carrington, but his relationship with Carrington was relatively brief, whereas he actually married Tanning and spent his life with her after he moved to the United States.

Mother-Daughter bookgroup
By SKP
Our Mother-Daughter bookgroup read this book and everyone fell in love with Beatrix Potter all over again. Our girls are 9 & 10 year olds and it prompted them to pull out their favorite old Potter books and share them with the rest of the group. But I think Moms appreciated the book more. We made the meal Beatrix ate every day as a child and shared it to bring the story a little closer to us.
