LOVE these books!

I didn't buy them in a set, but we have all 3 of these individually (animals, dinosaurs, why), as well as the one about space. We LOVE these books. I think we got our first when my oldest was about 1.5-2, and just started out looking at and being fascinated by the pictures. We'd pick a few pages to read, and would make it through the books that way vs. all in one sitting (impossible to read all that at once, so much info!). The books then got put to the side for awhile while other book interests too over, but my now-7-year-old is currently completely re-obsessed with these books. Now that he can read, it's a completely new experience. He loves them and has been carrying the stack everywhere he goes, even to school. I highly recommend, and these are long-lasting through many years. (We've also rented the "bugs" and "ocean" versions from library and enjoyed them, and I will likely buy the "world" one.)

My kids love these! They have been reading them all the time and come tell me the facts that they have learned. Although my daughter did inform me that she doesn't need her hair trimmed since there is a lady in China with hair 18 feet long.

A clear-headed and clearly written examination of the pros and cons of different ways for generating electricity

Almost everyone has an opinion on energy policy and what method(s) for producing electricity should be promoted in this country. And most of those opinions are half-baked. TRAVELING THE POWER LINE won't make you an expert, but it will make you better informed. And, hence, it will make you a better citizen.

Julianne Couch is a journalist. At the time she researched this book, she was teaching at the University of Wyoming and living in Laramie, Wyoming. Her starting point was concern for the ecological condition of the planet, as reflected in her efforts in her personal life to conserve energy and reduce her carbon footprint, although she wasn't rabid about it. Curious to know more, she researched and wrote TRAVELING THE POWER LINE.

Couch investigates nine different ways of producing electricity: wind farm; coal-fired generation; nuclear; natural gas; biomass; geothermal; hydroelectric; solar-thermal power; and tidal power. Believing that seeing enhances understanding, she visited a facility engaged in each form of electrical generation: from a near-by wind farm in Wyoming to a nuclear plant in Nebraska to a geothermal plant in Utah to an experimental project in easternmost Maine to use underwater currents (principally tidal currents) to generate electricity. The result is a readable -- and instructive -- book.

Each of the chapters is about twenty-five pages long. They are not highly technical. By and large, Couch takes the reader along with her as she investigates each form of electricity-generation, and the reader hears what Couch hears from plant operators, public interest advocates, and independent experts. By and large, Couch refrains from advocating one form of power generation vis-a-vis another, although the underlying bias is towards reducing greenhouse gases without crippling industry and the economy.

The lessons are that one cannot look at any form of electrical generation in the abstract, that no one form is the be-all and end-all, that one must also consider distribution and patterns of consumption, and that in evaluating the economic and ecological efficiency of any proposal for a new electrical generation facility there always are a multitude of factors to consider (down to whether certain species of animals - for example, the sage grouse - will be listed as endangered). Along the way, Couch exposes some of the commonplaces and shibboleths of contemporary public debate as falsehoods, or at least unhelpful overgeneralizations.

Couch's prose is not brilliant, like that of her journalistic hero John McPhee. Sometimes it is even a tad pedestrian. And there are a few instances in which an edit (or a stronger one) would have been useful - such as when she "putted along" [should be "puttered"] U.S. 30 at sixty miles per hour. But her writing is lucid, and the book never bogs down in details. If anything, the reader comes away wanting to know more - and with this subject, that's a good thing.

For open-minded over 18's only!

Joanne is a desperate housewife with an absent army husband and though financially secure she is most certainly not happy. Feeling overwhelmed and under appreciated a moments loss of concentration during the drive home from a weekend with the in-laws changes her life in ways she never imagined.

Dicey has hit on a very controversial subject here that could possibly offend some readers.........I on the other hand am not offended! But that's easy to say because the age of consent in the UK is sixteen so in my world the issues raised may be immoral but they are not illegal!

DG did a wonderful job in building Joanne's character, letting us get to know her as a Mother and a wife with high moral standards before we had to watch her very cringe worthy downfall to `paedophile'. It was quite disturbing to see because I had become so attached to her that it felt like I was witnessing a friend choose a path that could not end well but I was unable to prevent her from making the mistake. I understand why Dicey did this, and it worked...... if I hadn't connected with Joanne at the beginning it would have been easy to condemn her for what she was thinking about doing, but once I knew her it wasn't quite so black and white..........the waters were murky and I had to question if we have the right to generalise and judge!

This was an easy one to rate, no ifs and buts it gets 5 Stars and it's worthy of every one of them! I couldn't read fast enough to see what happened, its written in a style that suits my reading and the plot was unpredictable from beginning to end. Dicey Grenor has a very warped mind, she aims to shock in her work and shameful surprised the hell out of me! Oddly the most horrifying bit in the book that I found, was not the intimacy between our two MC's, it was a scene that involved Joanne's daughter Shimmer that finally had me dying ten thousand deaths and blushing even though I was alone when I read it, and if I'm honest had me feeling very uncomfortable! ( I will not explain further... no spoilers here!!!)

Love can be forbidden for many reasons and there will be opposing sides on every issue. Shameful is ultimately a romance concentrating on a relationship that is `forbidden' and I'm sure this fact alone will bring with it some negative comments and reviews. For me the book shocked me, surprised me, saddened me and made me smile. I found it such an emotional journey that I am moved by the book and that is what I look for when I read....Wow!

This was a very intriguing novel...indeed!!! You meet Joanne, a neglected military housewife, who's life revolves around her family and making them happy with little or no reciprocity. As you take a deeper look at Joanne, you can see how a woman with no sense of, pediphilia, in her nature, could succumb to such a thing. Joanne is basically a single mother, her husband provides for them financially, but, other than that, an absentee parent/husband. So, I applaud Joanne for holding on to her fidelity and not "stepping out" or divorcing her husband sooner! lol..I feel that this book has the potential to be very controversal, in the sense that some will be offended by some of Joanne's actions and decision in the novel. Oh yes, there will be a few heated conversations, but I feel, that this is what makes this novel such a great read!

Now, when you meet the other main character, Alex, a 16 year old adolescent, who appears to be wise beyond his years...you do have to remind yourself, that he is just a kid. As their two worlds collide, literally, you are slowly and painfully watching Joanne's demise, so to say, into the inevitable!!! On one hand, you can see how she gets caught up, but on the other hand...you are yelling at her to remove herself from the situation, not because you don't think that their feelings could be real..but, because of a little something called...Jail..lol...and the fact that he is still a kid! All I could think and kept saying to myself.."Nah, she's not going to do that, she seems to understand the consequences, and how absurd that would be, and...Oh no she didn't!!!" lol!!! I enjoyed this one very much, and look forward to more from this author.

Good read, thought provoking

Where do I start with "Shameful?" I do love taboo books, they give me an extra escape and really get my brain going so I was excited to start this book. It was a well written book and did a great job touching on a very Taboo subject without turning it into a dirty book about pedophilia. The relationship between Joanne and Alex starts innocently enough and you can see her trying hard to fight the feelings she may or may not be having but after being alone for months you can ALMOST see how it can happen. Her husband (Chad) is an ass and that was hard for me to read. He's a military man stationed abroad and as supporter of the military and a friend to many military personnel I know that most soldiers don't act like him when they leave for a tour, but some do.

The book was easy to read but I found myself having to continually put it down and walk away which is why I gave it 3.5 stars. My intrest was easily held long enough to finish but there were issues between Joanne and her children that were hard to read. As a mother who experienced serious Post-Partum depression, the way that she acted towards her children and some of the feelings she expressed were hard for me to read and brought up some very bad memories so my views may have been a bit skewed from the start on that issue.

The only other issue I had was the ending. The ending it's self was fulfilling but it happened almost too abruptly. One minute you're reading hot and heavy in a very dramatic scene and then Bam.... it was over. I personally didn't like how it ended....but again I'm going to chalk it up to my recent battle with PPD. I will keep this book on my kindle and will most likely re-read it in a year or so when my own personal issues aren't so fresh in my mind. I would easily recommend this book to anyone with an Open mind and a taste for books on the Taboo

Angela Faris Belt is a fine art photographer who has worked as a professional educator for fifteen years. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and she has received several awards and recognition for her fine art work and her work in photography education. A wonderful book for the serious photographer

This is a real photography book. It is a photography book written by a photographer for photographers and about photography. When I purchased this book I did not expect it to be the intellectual powerhouse of a book that it is. It was a most pleasant surprise. The author avoids the pitfalls of the typical photography books that one finds here on Amazon. Instead she treats the reader as a fellow artist and presents a concise thesis on photography as a true art form full of expression and vitality. Her inclusion of various modern photographers and their work is brilliant and adds a depth to this book that stands out in genre of "how-to" literature.

I purchased this book in the hopes that it would spark new ideas for images and not only did this book do exactly that but it also introduced me to ideas I had completely missed in earlier research. More importantly, I found myself repeatedly putting it down and going out and experimenting with my camera. In fact, I found it hard to finish because after a few pages I would once again find myself rushing out to try something new. I am now reading it for the second time and once again find it hard to keep from heading out to try something new.

I could go on and on exalting the virtues of this book but instead will summarize it as this - if you are looking for a book that will help elevate your interest in photography to a true art form, then this book is the perfect book for you. You will find as I did that this book changes your perception of the art of photography as well as change your approach to your own photography. But most importantly it will fill your mind with new ideas for images and for that I am eternally grateful.

An excellent book for today's photographer and teacher

Let me begin by saying, I love this book. I teach a digital photography class that is geared more towards the non-major. As such, more often than not, my students are using iPhones and "point-n-shoots" as well as DSLR cameras. The great advances in technology for compact digital cameras and smart phones raise the question, do I need a DSLR camera to take a photography class or to create stimulating and thought provoking images? The answer is no. I've seen some great images come from iPhones and compact digital cameras. Most text books I have come across are too focused on the technical aspects of photography, the camera itself, or slick software editing tricks and less about the guiding ideas behind the grammar of photography and powerful image making. I think "The Elements of Photography", does an exceptional job of embracing the current evolution of our field. This book has an approach that keeps the reader engaged whether they be a beginner, amateur, or professional and I consider it a valuable tool for a teacher to have in their arsenal.

Hands down the best set-up/repair book I've found.

Somebody put some thought into the layout; like when you've got your neck in one hand and a screwdriver in the other...the last thing you want to do is turn a page! This book solves that with straightforward instructions and large, useful photos...all on the same page. Only negative for me was the bass guitar chapter. Covers all the basics, I just wanted a few more "if you're at a gig and "x" happens" that the other chapters address so well. Still, it's does everything else so well I had to give it 5 out of 5.

"Tales from the road" make a normally boring subject matter fun again. Occasionally bordering on the unbelievable ("go save my drums" in the tornado comes to mind), but you can tell that author really is who he says he is. For Black Crowes & B-52's fans, it's worth the read even if you don't play.

Delivers what it promises, solid information and a look at a working guitar tech's life.

A guitar repair client asked me to assess the “Guitarist’s Guide to Maintenance and Repair: A Tech to the Stars Tells How to Maintain Your Axe Like a Pro” by Doug Redler and Dave Rubin. Despite the book’s title, I expected the pages to contain far too many stories with a “look at how cool I am hanging with Rock Stars” message and very little useful information. What I found when I actually opened the book is a book that delivers exactly what it claims, a guide to maintaining and repairing guitars, basses and amplifiers.
Redler gives straightforward directions to perform basic maintenance balanced with pertinent stories illustrating how he uses these techniques on the road as a guitar tech for artists like kd Lang, the B-52s, The Black Crowes and others. Clear photographs, straightforward writing and clever titles illustrate each section. The stories, taken from Redler’s 25 year career, demonstrate real life application of these techniques while giving readers unfamiliar with a guitar tech’s duties a good overall picture of his life on the road. Redler shares both the embarrassing mistakes he made as he learned his craft and a few of his triumphs. Overall he gives a balanced picture of his working life behind the scenes.
The author includes a resource section containing information about guitar repair schools; books videos/DVDs on the subject; tool, repair and parts sources; guitar sales and amp repair shops in New York City and Los Angeles; guitar, string and pickup companies; and two websites for those who want to get into the roadie business. He also discusses his list of basic tools he carries on the road.
While this book won’t give you all of the information to open your own repair shop, it will give you a more than solid foundation for maintaining your equipment to its highest standard. I recommend the book, especially to working musicians. It’s a valuable resource whether you are interested in maintaining your own gear or just want to be a more educated consumer.

Must read for any level guitar player.

As a novice player I don't know too much about the inner workings of my instruments. Having this book as a reference has given me a sense of confidence I've never had while working on my guitars. Weather you're serious about your music or just looking for a fun project, you can't go wrong with this step by step guide. There's also some fun tales from the road. With Doug's impressive resume of bands and artists he's worked with, I'd trust no one more to learn from. You won't be disappointed.

Dr. LeVeau�earned his BS degree in Education with emphasis in mathematics, physics, and physical education at the University of Colorado in Boulder, CO; his Certificate in Physical Therapy from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN; his MS in Physical Education from the University of Colorado; and his PhD in Biomechanics from Pennsylvania State University in University Park, PA. �

He has taught mathematics and science at Horace Mann Jr. High School in Colorado Springs, CO, and served as faculty in physical education and physical therapy departments at West Chester State College in West Chester, PA; University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC; University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, TX; Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA; and Alabama State University in Montgomery, AL. ��

He has published several research articles, book chapters, and 2 textbook editions related to biomechanics content. His texts have been translated in Spanish, French, and Italian. He has lectured nationally and internationally on topics covering biomechanics.

This is a clearly written and clearly illustrated text. It begins with the physical principles involved, and relates body movement and strength to the underlying physics. It extends the analysis of exercise equipment and therapeutic exercises to these same physical principles. .

Russia's special purpose forces...

As author Mark Galeotti points out, the Spetsnaz, Russia's much-vaunted military special forces, have been the subject of a certain amount of mythologizing over the years, inside and outside Russia. This Osprey Elite Series book is meant to be a corrective as well as a well-written history of Russia's Spetsnaz, including their roles in recent conflicts in Chechnya, Georgia and Ukraine.

The introduction makes the crucial point that the Spetznaz are not strictly speaking analogous to U.S. or other Western special forces units. They are special purpose units, meant for reconnaissance and specialized battlefield tasks, although their professionalism in comparison to the rest of the Russian military has often led to their being used in other roles, such as conventional infantry and for stability operations. The bulk of the narrative is a very readable history of the Spetsnaz, from their roots in the Bolshevik Red Army up through the Spanish Civil War, the Second World War, the Cold War, Afghanistan and the conflicts of modern Russia. The text makes the point that the Spetsnaz have often inspired both imitation and competition from other elements of the Soviet/Russian military, especially the Airborne Troops. The text is very nicely supported by an excellent collection of photographs, illustrations, and maps. Some coverage of uniforms and weapons is included. The concise nature of the book (62 pages of text) limits the amount of detail that can be included. The author has a strong background in the subject and is not shy about sharing his knowledge and his opinions. Recommended as an excellent introduction to the topic.

As always, Osprey publishing delivers. No doubt I am sure more in-depth description of Russian weapon systems could have been added. Still the strength of this book is in the detailed origins of the Spetsnaz. The author dispelled the myth of Russia's most mysterious fighting force and showed the multilayers of this service.

Book has many pictures and colored plates in it. I have read several books about this formation but the information is always dated, but not the case with this. Each unit location and mission statues in covered also the latest weapons is covered. Great book on the organization and the latest information makes this book worth the purchase. Great read and enjoyable

If the topic is an existing technology, we provide a refresher to sharpen your memory since the last time you took an exam. Remember, one of the best ways of learning is by doing. Mediocre

I thought the book was very mediocre. Getting this book you have to have an understanding of some of the technologies already, but it does a horrible job of at least summarizing or giving a quick refresher for the technology being discussed. For example, IPAM - it would have been nice to give some type of explanation about it, but it just jumps in and says, "this is how you do it."

Would not recommend.

Visible omissions of big chunks, lots of material not covered

There are parts of the exam material covered that have been superseded by other commands and functions, and are not present on the errata page for this book. Entire sub-sections (for example so far, "Manage Windows or Linux containers using Windows Powershell") are just mentions of components that are in development and only give broad descriptions. It doesn't describe what cmdlets are contained, or what use cases are specified for a particular function, etc.

PRACTICE EVERYTHING IN THIS BOOK. Go through the steps and understand what you're doing, and lab it well. I wouldn't go on the exam path with just this book.

This book is in stark departure from the Server 2012 MCSA upgrade exam book that MS Press has put out. Unless you're in a hurry to slam down knowledge, I'd hope for either a major revision for 2016 R2 or another company's prep book.
