About the Author

Born in Malaysia in 1857 to a Chinese father and Portuguese mother, Gu Hongmingstudi ed in Scotland. He received an M.A. in Literature from the University of Edinburgh, a diploma in Civil Engineering at the University of Leipzig, and studied law in Paris. Returning to Malaysia in 1880, he joined the colonial Singapore civil service and eventually went to China where he held many ranking positions in the Imperial government. Throughout his career, he wrote many essays and books about Confucius, primarily in English. By the end of his life in 1928 he was renowned as an interpreter of China and the Chinese people to the West. Dr. Jinli He, Ph.D. is Assistant Professor of Modern Languages and Literatures at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. She received her Ph.D. from the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at Peking University.

A scholar viewpoint on the spirit of Chinese people

This is a scholar work from Dr Gu who mastered nine languages with 13 PhDs in royal English. He expressed in English and French what he witnessed the Foreign Powers in imperialism and colonialism in China. He commented what the Protestant missionaries did in China in "civilizing" heathen Chinese. He saw that Western Civilization in China was basically Darwinism of jungle law. He wrote beautifully in introducing the essentials of Chinese civilization of five thousand years to Westerns who were impressed and amazed that a "Chinaman" was able to master the language eloquently Understanding both Chinese culture and Western culture enable him to compare and contrast the good and bad, justice and injustice, true and false. He saw the Western men of God act contrary to God's teaching of respecting others, causing confrontations, ill-feelings and hatred. He tried to act according to Confucius's teaching"do not do onto others what you do not want to do onto you".

This classical writing will help readers to comprehend the turn of last century happening in China between China and Foreign Powers. We need more Dr Gu to share for the modern world.

Interesting

While I did not agree with many of the viewpoints put forth by the author, I found the book fascinating. The logic of his arguments was so interesting. I also recognized the influence of the times and culture in which he lived. The book allowed me to learn a bit more about a very prominent Chinese author and philosopher.

I love Brad Burton and this book on Life and Business. I have been through some massive challenges in my life lately (business growing great, but long-term partner leaving me) and this book has been my "Bible" keeping me together.

As Expected, Amazing and a Must Buy !

Another wake up call from Brad Burton to all entrepreneurs, existing and aspiring. Following through GOYA and GOYA TOO, this book is a must read not only for those running a business but also for those who sincerely want to run a better life. There are no short-cuts to get it right in life and business, there is no magic wand, there is no quick-fix, one has to take responsibility and more importantly one has to take massive action.

In my view Brad Burton is a perfect reference for many entrepreneurs as he is real. His message is real. And he has been through what all entrepreneurs go through and he is still going through challenges. We often tend to look for role models who are at the pinnacle but I feel little can be learnt from them or anything at all applied. On the other hand, Brad lives in a real world, faces real problems and is so close to the common man, which makes of him a perfect role model for budding and aspiring entrepreneurs.

I have read GOYA and GOYA TOO, and now this gem LIFE BUSINESS JUST GOT EASIER, and trust me, this book is a 5-star and am hardly midway through it yet. The book is like "great food", the first bite tells you the flavour it holds, and it is really great.

If you are serious about running life and business successfully, it's time to join Brad Burton on this personal and intimate journey and trust me, you will not only enjoy the journey but arrive at the destination you had always cherished.

Chewy Food for Thought

This is an insightful look at a beloved story. As with any kind of an in-depth literary analysis, it's hard to find a definitive response. To some extent, we must always relegate our thoughts to mere speculation. I don't agree (at least at first glance) with all of the conclusions here, but they're all chewy food for thought. I definitely won't be looking at Gatsby in the same way ever again, and I appreciate having had my brain stretched.

Insightfully Challenging the Norm

It has been said that reading F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel The Great Gatsby is a mysterious experience—something like eating a bowl of whipped cream and, once you are done, feeling totally full and satisfied. This may be due several reasons: the characters are simultaneously exaggerated and real; both the story and the situation capture an essentially American experience, one replete with longings, triumphs, and failures; and then there is, of course, the luminosity of Fitzgerald’s prose. For almost thirty years, as a student and professor of American literature, I have sought to unravel the mystery of this book and have resolved to teach it as often as possible until I get my lectures just right. This has yet to happen.
Nevertheless, Neal Abbott’s insightful examination of this most American of texts brings me closer to this gold ring: his perspicacious reading calls into question some of the most established assumptions of the story, about who killed Myrtle Wilson and even who killed Gatsby himself. Also, once he lays out his argument that Gatsby is on a grail quest, it seems so obvious that one wonders why it wasn’t seen before, let alone why it isn’t one of the more popular and established readings of the book.
Again, I have tried for many years to perfect my teaching of The Great Gatsby and, because of Mr. Abbott’s little book, I feel I am much closer to that goal.

Very informative! Tremendous amount of specific details and directions in a book of this size! Loads of photographs of each step. Instructions anybody can understand. Easy to read. Well done book. A complete reference book by one of America's foremost doll artists is an invaluable guide. A "must have" for porcelain ball jointed doll makers both new to the art and seasoned professionals. Martha Armstrong-Hand openly shares all her techniques; including the use of springs in place of elastic cord. Her amazing background has provided her with so many useful secrets and tips. Great additition to any craft library!

An apprenticeship with Martha Armstrong-Hand

This is a classic porcelain ball-jointed doll making book. This book should always be in print and available to the porcelain BJD making community. While this book is NOT a step-by-step tutorial about how to make a porcelain BJD, certainly all of the information that anyone would need, to make a porcelain BJD, is here in this book. In lieu of not being able to find this book (it is currently out-of-print, and unavailable), check out the Martha's Method topic at the Woodland Earth Studio online forum.

Selling this book

This book originally sold for $19.99. There is a renewed interest in this subject for technique, some of the information is not pertinent because it relates to porcelain dolls. For unknown reasons the publisher will not reissue. Because the book was out of print one surfaced occasionally and this book has skyrocketed in price. Now everyone who finds a copy thinks they will get $300+ for this book. The books are out there but at over inflated prices. If sellers price it at a reasonable price we will buy.
