don't waste your money on the 2014 professional edition

The easy access thumb tabs in earlier versions have been replaced by post-it tabs the user places on pages. Why pay $20 to $30 more for the professional edition when I can purchase $1 worth of post-it tabs myself? And to add insult to injury, the printing on the post-it tabs is black on dark green and black on dark blue; the contrast is so poor the tabs are virtually unreadable.

Very disappointing. I won't waste my money on this more expensive version of this publication unless the thumb tabs are restored in future editions.

Get this version!

The professional edition is very worth getting! The color coding makes looking through the codes much easier; your eye is drawn to what's important and it's easy to use. The anatomical diagrams are very helpful in understanding the codes. The spiral binding is worth it alone, when you are flipping through and referencing your codes. Classmates have gotten the Optum version and it's far inferior to this one, it's not nearly as easy to read and several have expressed regret that they didn't get this version.

It's A Textbook

Since the book isn't exactly open to interpretation, all I can review is what it does.

It's easy to find what you are looking for. There are great tips inside. The book is clear and concise. There are sticky notes inside you can use to label the various sections should you have the desire to do so.

It's sturdy enough in that the covers haven't torn off riding around in my bag, nor have the covers come off the spiral. I purchased the book for a medical coding class.

Buying this book on Amazon saved me a great deal of money.

Looks really good

I just bought these to help with my studying for the USMLE. The deck is short...around 200 cards, but they cover all of the microbes you need to know for Step 1 (and more). It should take a dedicated person 2 weeks to memorize these cards (if you do 15 per day). I pulled out 5 random cards, looked at them for 2 minutes each, and was able to remember most of the details simply by remembering the picture on the card.

LOVE, LOVE these cards!

I wish I had these cards sooner. They help me remember oganisms because each organism is like a "character." I'm a visual learner so the colors and pictures really keep the organisms in my memory and I can associate them with pathology better. The cards also have mnemonics that can help you determine what drug treamtents. Also, the cards show how to distinguish them based on gram stain, growth media, etc. They are really organize! I really love these cards! I suggest checking out the cards and how they look like to see if they will suit your learning style. It is definitely worth the money!

These cards work great for med school microbiology class. I think it's probably best to use these cards in conjunction with another learning source like micro made ridiculously simple, just to help you get the big picture.

These are not flashcards in the traditional sense, but rather information organizing cards, like info graphics really.

This one of Jean-Luc Cheri's more recent works, and as I have noted earlier, it is another outstanding work of erotic fiction. In my opinion, Jean-Luc Cheri is just one of the best in this category and this is one of the best examples of the quality of the work. It is a fairly quick read--yet, it has everything. An excellent and believable backstory--good character development. The erotic scenes between the main characters are explicit and a little different than the routines found in most of these types of books. In addition to being a very steamy erotic story, it also develops into a short, but interesting romance that competes well with the light novelettes in those categories. I highly recommend it. My only problem, is Jean-Luc Cheri's material can, overtime, erode a budget established for this type of material.

I couldn't even finish reading. In fact, I never even made it as far as a sex scene. I was really thrown off by the dialogue. Usually, if the story is great then I don't focus on what the characters are saying. However, in this case I felt that the eighteen year old seemed more like a child. She was very forward, but the way she was talking made me picture an amateur speaking. I just didn't care for it. I probably won't choose this author again, which is highly unfortunate, because the ebook world is slammed with their work. It just wasn't for me. I gave it a three and not a one, because I couldn't judge on whether the erotica scenes were done well.

Clandestine Radio Operators

As a stealth amateur radio operator, I was thrilled to purchase a copy of this great book. I had seen other books on the subject matter and on nearly every aspect of World War II but this was the book I thought I was searching for. It compliments another book I own entitled, " Wireless for the Warrior", vol.4 (UK) that chronicles the history of clandestine radio communication equipment.

I recently purchased the book, "Spy Princess" which chronicles the life and 12-week SOE clandestine wireless operator career of Moor Inayat Khan. From that book I learned EXACTLY how clandestine radio operators deployed their simple end-fed antenna system. They were taught to simply connect one end of the aerial to the transmitter, toss the other end out of a window and attach it to a tree (pp.141-2). Unfortunately, the book "Clandestine Radio Operators" focuses more on the technical details of the transceiver than on the clandestine tactics employed by the SOE agents in the field.

The book is well written but says little of the clandestine lives of the agent radio operators: I wanted to see how "pianists" (code name for clandestine radio operators) set up their equipment and how they managed to erect and conceal the necessary outdoor end-fed antennas from the Nazis. The book offers generic details and photos of WWII clandestine transceivers as well as "pianists" training and deployed in the field without offering technical information on the "pianists" actually hid and used their equipment. Overall though, a great book.

During World War II the use of clandestine radios for agent communications was widespread. Literally hundreds of agent network circuits were operating during the war. On both sides the clandestine signal operations, plans (call signs, frequencies, and times of transmissions) and procedures used by agents were for the most part of the utmost simplicity, especially compared to modern military communications. Generally four types of agent radio operators can be distinguished during operations in WW II, those who operated in metropolitan areas in concert with well-organized underground organizations; those who operated as singletons in cities; those who were with the guerrilla groups; and those who worked as singletons in isolated rural areas. For the Allies most of these agents came from the American Office of Strategic Services (forerunner to the CIA) and the British Special Operations Executive (SOE), as well as other Allied covert forces like the Long-Range Desert Group, Special Air Service, Commandos, Rangers and Alamo Scouts. This book covers the selection and training of agents as radio operators; code procedures and encryption techniques; mission and operation highlights; with the majority of the book covering technical date and radio sets manufactured by the Americans, British and Polish for special warfare. This book is profusely packed with B&W and color photography on every page with a vast majority never appearing before. This is very good niche book on the form of secret warfare. I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in pirate radio operations, HAM radio/amateur radio enthusiast, covert communications, cryptology and special operations will find this book very interesting.

Must have for the history buff or amateur radio op

Because of the high-quality in its production, it's almost a slightly scaled-down version of what I'd call a coffee-table book. Fine text, stories, and vignettes. However, the focus is on the actual gear used and the methods. The photography (B&W and color) done to document the vintage equipment (and sadly not much remains) is superb.

If you are a radio operator, particularly someone who likes the simplicity of thrown wire, low power and a Morse key, this is a must-have. Ditto if you are World War II history buff; you need to add this one to the body of work on your shelf.

About the Author
A top graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, L. David Marquet commanded the nuclear-powered, fast-attack submarine USS Santa Fe from 1999 to 2001. Santa Fe earned numerous awards for being the most improved ship in the Pacific and the most combat-effective ship in the squadron. Since leaving the Navy he has worked with businesses nationwide as a leadership consultant. David also teaches graduate level leadership at Columbia University. He is a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations and lives in Florida with his wife, Jane.

This is one book about leadership that you should read!

I am skeptical about books on leadership. Most are written by persons who have reached positions of hierarchical authority in organizations and then anointed themselves "leaders." They don't talk about the political infighting and maneuvering that got them the job. Instead they wax eloquent about their skill in developing people - skills that frequently exist only in their imagination and the book they have written which book is often fiction parading as non-fiction. I was a contributing editor for one of the major business magazines and have met plenty of CEOs. I will leave it to you to guess how many times insiders have told me that the book their chief has written is wildly off the mark.

I have not met any of the persons that David Marquet commanded, but I will lay a substantial wager that many will follow him wherever they can.

Full disclosure: I am biased. I think that David is a leader, not a commander or a CEO or a senior officer but an authentic leader, for two reasons: 1) his views conform largely to my own, and 2) He undeniably moved a top of the line US nuclear submarine form bottom of the heap to the top by many objective measures.

David's views on leadership, and I repeat I heartily endorse these, are:

1) "Our greatest struggle is within ourselves. Whatever sense we have of thinking we know something is a barrier to continued learning."
2) The way to build a great team is to push decision making down, way down. The more each person feels he has the ability to do what he needs to in his immediate working environment, the more he will "own" his job and the more engaged he will be.
3) Engaged people will bubble with ideas about how to make the whole enterprise better. Some of these ideas will be relevant to a particular section and some for the entire organization. For the larger scope ideas, the originators will go out and get the cooperation/approval of others necessary to make the improvement happen.
4) It is not enough to push the decision making way down. You also have to send down responsibility, authority and the requisite resources. If you do not do this simultaneously, you simply increase the frustration level. Would you invite some one to come and smell dinner but not eat it? Case closed.
5) The mission is critically important. What is it, how is it defined and communicated, and is it a critical determinant of what decisions are made and how they are made? The answers to these questions will determine the success of the organization.

There is much more but these give you the picture. There are wonderful anecdotes throughout the book. For example, Marquet relates an incident where he was denied the opportunity to sail with a submarine whose command he was to assume within a month. He just wanted to get a quick read on what he would soon be facing. The departing captain refused to take him for many reasons mostly unexplained. One explained reason was that Marquet would have taken up scarce sleeping space. What is interesting is the lesson Marquet draws from this incident and how it shapes his own future actions. I will quote directly from the book to illustrate this:

"Even though this 2-day underway period would be greatly useful in sustaining Olympia's quality performance after he departed, he apparently had no interest in helping facilitate that. Could I fault him? In the navy system, captains are graded on how well their ships perform up to the day they depart, not a day longer. After that it becomes someone else's problem.

I thought about that. On every submarine and ship, and in every squadron and battalion, hundreds of captains were making thousands of decisions to optimize the performance of their commands for their tour and their tour alone. If they did anything for the long run it was because of an enlightened sense of duty, not because there was anything in the system that rewarded them for it. We didn't associate an officer's leadership effectiveness with how well his unit performed after he left. We didn't associate an officer's leadership effectiveness with how often his people got promoted 2, 3 and 4 years hence. We didn't even track that kind of information. All that mattered was performance in the moment."

To truly understand how valuable this type of thinking and approach is, ponder this question: If the "leaders" of our financial institutions knew that their bonuses were dependent on how the executive decisions they made would play out over the next five years, and those bonuses were subject to being recovered within that period, do you think we would still have had the blow-ups that wrecked so many venerable institutions and nearly destroyed our financial sector?

There is one other reason I find this book invaluable. We all know that a good question is worth more than an hour of detailed instruction. Socrates certainly thought so. Each chapter has several profoundly thought provoking questions at the end. If you grapple with these questions, you may well find that your view of the world is being turned around. Here is a random example: "Are your people trying to achieve excellence or just avoid making mistakes?" Think about the implications of this for your organization.

Get this book and read it with your highlighter in hand. Probably a good idea to get two highlighters.

I'm impressed Marquet successfully codified the mechanisms and activities that turned his ship around

First, I am a 30 year U.S. Navy veteran. I want to say I'm lucky I was never involved in the part of the Navy bent on blind followership that David Marquet describes as the starting condition of the USS Santa Fe but I don't think it was luck. Don't get the wrong impression of the entire U.S. Navy based on his experience. There are elements of the Navy that operate just as Marquet describes though and I am impressed that he could codify the mechanisms and activities that turned his ship around. I had successful tour after successful tour of duty in the Navy using many, not all, of the techniques Santa Fe adopted in a short period with such dramatic results. I just did what seemed right to me but never took the time to codify what it was that made it right. This book really outlined and clarified what it was that made it work over and over for me. I truly appreciate the courage and the intelligence it takes to make such a drastic positive change. You may not have ever experienced life in military service but I can tell you that what Marquet describes here works in both military service and the private sector. Now that Marquet has taken the time to tell the story of what worked, how the mechanisms were developed and has published the recorded methods and results I feel I have a been given a compass to help guide me in the future. I've been a successful leader on highly successful teams for a long time and I see attaining even greater success in the future with this information. The book is written in easily understood language, using brilliant analogies and clear, concise prose that anyone can appreciate. Start on page 1 and read all the way through. I highly recommend the book and suggest learning and sharing widely.

Brilliant Leadership Strategy

I've chosen a 5 star rating because David Marquette's approach to leadership, and his description of it in this book, is unlike almost every example of leadership we're familiar with. In "leader-leader" it's a shared organizational effort to promote clarity and competence. An example is how Marquette suggested his team speak their intentions out loud before taking the kinds of actions which, if done wrong, would have negative consequences. By adopting this practice, his nuclear submarine crew was able to catch more mistakes before they were made. Through this method they were able to become the most highly recognized submarine in the Navy. What's an even deeper testimony to the success of this method is that men who served under Marquette's leadership went on to high ranking levels in the Navy at a much higher rate than the average. I would recommend Turn the Ship Around! to anyone who leads a team and wants to inspire competence and shared responsibility with those they lead.

Official Price Guide To Antique And Modern Firearms -8th Ed.

This book may not be a Flayderman's Guide in the detail that is offered, but for what it is, it simply can't be beaten!
This is the one book that you must have in your library that you won't get rid of until the next edition comes out!
When other guides fail you, and don't list that obscure gun in their pages, you can almost always find it here. Forget the fact that this book isn't updated as often as I would like to see it done, the guns are in there, even if the details are lacking and the prices aren't up to date. All book price guides are outdated before they hit the bookstands, anyway, since it takes about a year to compile prices, edit copy and print the books. You have to use any book as a guide, only, and inject auction values, gun show offerings and other sources of knowledge to arrive at real value, in any case. This book is a "must have" simply as an identifier!

Price Guide to Antique and Modern Firearms; Review

I rate this book a solid five stars. This book is a very comprehensive price guide. It covers literally hundreds of manufacturers American and European. The Price Guide lists the grades and options and also classifies the gun (ie.curio, relic, modern, and antique).I do not however,recommend this book to the novice collector. The book is mainly text with few pictures depicting the individual grades or models.Personally I like it for the fact it is "unclutterd" by photo's which can be very misleading. I would say this book is a must have for the experienced collector or auction and gunshow attendants. The guide is compact for easy carrying around the shows and is formatted by maker for quick reference. The guide also has a very comprehensive glossary of gun terminology and even has a cartridge price and ATF classification guide.

Too Many Mistakes

There are just far too many mistakes in the book to be able to give much credit to the values it lists. Supposidly the author is some sort of expert on guns, but there are many, many errors in models, manufacturers, etc. to believe he has much experience at all. Pass on this one.
